Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Banner Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a banner with detailed, pointed ends surrounding the maker's mark. The first example of Norton stoneware decorated in this manner that we have offered. An approximately 8" x 5 1/2" L-shaped section reglued at base/underside of jug's right side. A thin 3 3/4" extends vertically from this damage. A short, glazed-over in-the-firing line to base. A smooth, in-the-firing contact mark to right side. An area of staining to right side. Very minor handle wear. H 14".
