One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Strasburg, VA origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tall collar and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed stem bearing tulips and buds in the style of Samuel Bell. Cobalt highlights to tops of handles. Though closely-related in form and decoration to the work of the Bell family, this jar is more likely made by an associated potter familiar with the Bells' work. The capacity mark impressed under each handle is undocumented in the Bells' production. A thin 3" crack and thin 2 1/4" crack from rim. Rim chips. Chips to one handle. A few base chips. A short, vertical line to base. Some residue/minor wear to surface. H 9 1/4".
