Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Little Falls, NY Stoneware Advertising Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed floral motif with large, circular blossom, accented with spots. Impressed above with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "P.A. STARING / GROCERIES AND PROVISIONS, / LITTLE-FALLS N.Y." Reverse impressed with J. & E. Norton maker's mark above a second one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark. An unusual combination of impressed advertising and maker's mark. Wear to inner rim for lid. Staining throughout. Two minor chips to underside at edge and a minor in-the-firing ping to bottom edge on reverse. Minor clay residue to base. H 10 1/4".
