Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pinwheel Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed quatrefoil design within a heavily-striped circle surrounded by spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Striking kaleidoscopic design with excellent color. This jug is the first example of Norton family stoneware that we have seen decorated in this manner. Excellent condition with a small chip to interior of spout. H 13 3/4".
