Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Stamped "G.W. BOYD," George Washington Boyd, Rock Mills, AL, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with short, wide spout, the surface covered in a green alkaline glaze accented with iron flecks. Impressed with "G.W. BOYD" maker's mark at shoulder. Born, about 1856, this previously-undocumented potter was the son of Rock Mills, Alabama potter, Francis M. Boyd. (For information on Francis Boyd, see Brackner, 113, 219.) This jug is the only signed example of George Washington Boyd's work that we are aware of. Very nice condition with two small spout chips. H 14".
