Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Date and Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an abstract slip-trailed foliate motif below the date, "1856." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A very large Y-shaped crack descending from rim on front and extending onto reverse and underside. Staining to surface. Underside partially covered with a thin layer of blue material. H 13 1/2".
