Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a basket brimming with flowers, leaves, vines, and dotted trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Light exfoliation to midsection on reverse. A reglued 7" x 4" wedge on reverse. A thin 8 1/2" crack to right of decoration on front. A very faint 1 3/4" inverted Y-shaped surface line to midsection on front, not visible on interior. Short surface lines to rim on front. A tiny chip to one handle. A faint 2" Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. A small glazed-over dent at base on side of crock. Minor bubbling to cobalt. H 11 1/2".
