Very Rare Stoneware Canning Jar with Experimental Floral Stencil, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapered jar with "semi-squared" wax sealer rim, decorated with a stenciled design of a flowering plant. This motif is not applied in slip, but rather appears to be created through attaching a cutwork design to the front of the jar and firing the jar with the design attached. The different firing conditions of the surface results a darker area producing the image of the flowering plant. A related treatment is seen on an oversized Western Pennsylvania jug cooler with heron motifs, inscribed "MARY WAGNER / 1878," sold as lot 170 in Crocker Farm's July 20, 2019 auction. Excellent condition with minimal wear to interior of rim and inner wax sealer rim. H 8 1/2".
