Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flying Hawk Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a hawk with heavily-detailed wings, flying above two mountains and a fence. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The crock and its decoration feature superb color and the size of the hawk motif is noteworthy, measuring approximately 12" long around the curve of the crock's front. The inclusion of mountains in the design is most unusual. This crock survives in remarkable condition with some minor flakes to shoulder on reverse, some faint staining, and a small in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder on front. H 11 1/2".
