One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle; decorated on the reverse with a large, abstract stenciled design resembling a snowflake, and on the front with scrolled stenciling. Base of spout flanked by wreath-like brushwork. Cobalt highlights to applied clay tabs and the terminals of the handle at base. Cobalt accent to maker's mark. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some light staining to end of spout. H 9 3/8".
