Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a flowering plant bearing three blossoms with elongated stamens and a drooping blossom composed of graduated spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Very nice condition with a 3" crack from rim on reverse, two small in-the-firing surface fissures to underside, a shallow, 7/8" in-the-firing iron ping to reverse, a tiny nick to one handle, and some bubbling to cobalt. H 13 1/2".
