Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Cross Motif, Stenciled "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an intricate stenciled design of a cross composed of scrollwork and spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Measuring roughly ten gallons, this jar is the largest example of Harrisburg stoneware that we have ever offered. Jar is out-of-round. An approximately 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" cross-shaped surface line to front, not visible on interior. Some minor fry to cobalt. A small restored rim chip on reverse. A 2" brown-colored restored area to right of cross. H 16 7/8" ; Diam. (across top) 15 3/4".
