Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid form with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large flower with grid-like patterning to the center of the blossom and striping to the petals and leaves. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid. A 5" x 1 3/8" restored section to rim on reverse. Four short hairlines from rim, the longest measuring 3". A tight crack across underside, continuing 2" up base on reverse. A 1 1/4" line from base on side of churn. Chips to inner rim for lid and wear to typical interior base. Lid with wear to top edge and two chips to top edge. H 18".
