Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Tree-of-Life" Decoration, attributed to Stephen B. Sweeney, Henrico County, VA, circa 1838-1868, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and squared rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a cobalt "tree-of-life" motif styled after the work of Henry Lowndes of Petersburg, VA. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 4" x 4 1/2" inverted Y-shaped crack to shoulder emanating from a chip at shoulder. One handle with a 2 1/4" loss and heavy chipping. H 13 1/2".
