Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, incised banding to midsection, and unusual, crescent-shaped lug handles; decorated with an artistic brushed design of an undulating fuchsia vine between freehand stripes. Delicate spotted brushwork to the blossoms. Further decorated below with a dramatic looping "3," flanked by curved dashes, along with wavy stripes above and below. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor nick to end of one handle. H 13 1/2".
