Extremely Rare Stoneware Puzzle Jug with Bird Decoration, attributed to the Fulper Pottery, Flemington, NJ, Dated 1917, bulbous jug with pinched and perforated pouring spout, the handle hollowed and fashioned with a small spout for pouring. Surface covered in a Bristol slip glaze, decorated with an elaborate cobalt design of three birds perched on branches, with each figure separated by a leaf. Shoulder and handle decorated with dashed and dotted trails of cobalt slip. Shoulder embellished with German writing, including the date "1917 Noveber (sic)." Midsection includes the inscriptions "Flemington, NJ" and "Amerika." Top portion of jug dipped in a glossy light brown glaze. Featuring an exceedingly rare form and classic Fulper bird motifs, this puzzle jug is among the finest examples of Bristol-slip-glazed stoneware from this pottery that we are aware of.
