Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "Tyler," Stamped "E S FOX ATHENS," New York State origin, circa 1841, highly-ovoid jug with squared spout, featuring the brushed cobalt inscription, "Tyler," for President John Tyler, a member of the Whig Party, who served from 1841 to 1845. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Relatively few examples of American stoneware have survived with inscribed names of presidents. Spout chips. Lines and crazing to spout. Some crazing to base. A small in-the-firing iron ping to right side near base. Some light staining. H 15".
