Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with paddle-shaped tail, perched on a flowering vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes wooden lid and dasher. Large areas of restoration, affecting some of decoration. Some of restoration is peeling due to age. Chips and wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with chips. H 18 1/4".
