Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Profuse Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "HIGGINS & CO / CLEVELAND O," circa 1840, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large flowering tulip plant surrounded by wavy cobalt stripes. Haphazard drips of cobalt add visual appeal to the design. Cobalt highlights to top half of each handle. Rare Ohio mark, excellent size and form, and wonderful decoration. Excellent condition with minor chips to interior of rim. An in-the-firing contact mark and stone ping on reverse. Three small base chips, two of which are glazed over. H 18 7/8".
