Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a forked trunk atop a shrubbed ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A salt drip to pheasant. A fairly innocuous, in-the-firing contact mark to right of pheasant. An approximately 2" x 2" network of lines to right side of spout. A tiny inverted U-shaped line to spout. Some fry to cobalt. Very minor surface wear. H 16".
