Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS, / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK.," early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate motif featuring scalloped leaves. Front decorated with a smaller incised flourish below the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The use of incised decoration on both sides is uncommon in Crolius's work. Exfoliation to surface. A 7/8" x 7/8" rim chip above handle. Shallow chipping around base. In-the-firing iron pings to surface. H 11".
