Incised Redware Cup, Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, Doylestown, PA, late 19th or early 20th century, flared cup with incised floral decorations and the incised Pennsylvania-German inscription, "Essen ist fur leib und leben / Drinken ist auch gut darneben (Eating is for existence and life, Besides drinking is also good) / 1793." Surface decorated with manganese accents and covered in a clear lead glaze. This cup was made during the late 19th or early 20th century at Henry Chapman Mercer's Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in the early Pennsylvania-German style. Provenance: From a fifty year private collection. Wear to base. Small rim and surface chips. H 4 5/8".
