Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Wreath and 1865 Date, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," NY State origin, 1865, semi-ovoid churn with applied lug handles and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of connected flowers forming a wreath around the date "1865." Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid. Wear and minor chipping to exterior of rim. Chips and wear throughout inner rim for lid. A 1 1/4" partially glazed-over iron ping to reverse. A 3/4" base chip on front. A 1 1/4" base chip on reverse. A salt drip to left of decoration. Minor chipping to shoulder molding on front. A small surface ping to shoulder on front. Some additional minor surface wear to churn. Lid with a short crack, a few chips, and edge wear. H (excluding lid) 18 3/8".
