One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," Alexandria, D.C. (now VA) origin, circa 1835, rotund jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated with a large brushed flowering plant featuring a circular blossom flanked by foliate devices. Reverse decorated with three additional foliate devices. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Appealing form with strong color. Excellent condition with a chip to each handle, some slumping to rim, a narrow in-the-firing contact mark to front, and some water glass staining. H 8 1/4".
