Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Folk Art Toothed Bird Decoration, probably Albany, NY or Bissett Family, Old Bridge, NJ, circa 1815, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a whimsical, incised and cobalt-highlighted design of atoothed bird with fan shaped crest, dotted wing, and fan-shaped crest. Reverse decorated with three cobalt brush strokes joined at one end. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Imaginative decoration, in many ways reminiscent of the later "goonie bird" motifs of Cortland, New York. Heavy chipping to base, including a 1 7/8" chipped section to base. In-the-firing flaws to surface, including a glazed-over iron ping to front. H 13 3/4".
