Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a long-tailed bird perched on a forked stump with ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The style of bird motif on this jug is not documented in Leder and Cesana's The Birds of Bennington. Large spout chip. Otherwise excellent condition with two minor, in-the-firing surface nicks to shoulder. H 14".
