Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Reclining Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a stag with turned head and spotted body, reclining between hills with two fences and shrubs, along with a pine tree in the distance. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional color to crock and decoration, featuring bold, enamel-like cobalt slip against a light clay ground. Excellent, essentially as-made condition, with a minor, glazed-over dent to base on reverse, and a small chip to underside, possibly in-the-firing. H 10 7/8" ; Diam. (across top) 11 5/8".
