Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "BENNINGTON / FACTORY," Captain John Norton, Bennington, VT, early 19th century, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a boldly-brushed "2." at the shoulder. Impressed below the spout with the earliest, and among the rarest, Norton family maker's marks, "BENNINGTON / FACTORY," brushed over in cobalt slip. Additional cobalt highlight to lower handle terminal. One of only five examples bearing this stamp that we have ever offered. Spider crack to front, continuing onto right side of jug. A narrow 7/8" hole to reverse. A few glazed-over iron pings. A small chip to underside at edge, along with some additional very minor base chipping. Two minor nicks to spout.
