Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "HUDSON & FRENCH, / GALWAY VILLAGE, N.Y.," third quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flower accented with spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The first example of stoneware bearing this stamp that we have offered. A thin line across underside, forming a small Y on the side of the jar and short line on the front of the jar. A faint 1 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to side of jar near base, not visible on interior. A 2" surface line to shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior.
