Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & Co.," Alexandria, VA, circa 1820, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a large flowering plant bearing fan-shaped flowers and a central oval blossom. Shoulder decorated with brushed drape motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed above one handle with the merchant mark, "H. SMITH & Co." Unusual and elaborate decoration, exhibiting strong color. A 1 1/4" chip to underside at edge. Other small base chips. Small chips to handles.
