Fine One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," VA origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with rounded rim, tooled shoulder, and arched tab handles, decorated with a large flowering plant featuring wavy leaves at the base and a large Germanic tulip at center. Reverse decorated along the shoulder with chain links and two zig-zagging lines. Excellent color. A fine example of Milburn's bold artistic slip-trailed decorations, featuring an unusual floral variant. Literature: Illustrated on the cover of Eddie L. Wilder, Alexandria, VA Pottery: 1792-1876. Professional restoration to heaving chipping to the handles. Professional restoration to a large rim chip on reverse. Small base chips. Chips on underside.
