One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "1833" Date, Stamped "CLARK & FOX / ATHENS, N.Y.," 1833, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with the boldly-brushed date, "1833." Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and maker's mark. Exceptional color. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. Very nice condition with a chip to underside at edge, a small chip to handle, some light staining, and two small in-the-firing pings to reverse, which are glazed over.
