Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horse Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO, N.Y," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a standing horse with cross-hatched body, below a cobalt-script "3" with flourish. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. One of a few Braun pieces known with a decoration of a horse. Significant restoration to surface, including horse. Face of horse remains unrestored. Slip-trailed "3" with flourish and cobalt over maker's mark are both unrestored. A 1" rim chip on reverse. A 1 1/4" chip to underside at edge.
