Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to Atherton & Trice, Albany, NY, circa 1820-1826, ovoid form with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed foliate design in the Manhattan style, featuring unusual cross-hatching. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This crosshatched variant of a Manhattan motif has been found on other marked examples of stoneware made at the pottery of grocer, Stephen Atherton, and potter, James Trice. Rim chips. Light exfoliation to shoulder. A semi-circular spider line on underside, continuing a short distance onto base. A glazed-over iron ping to base.
