Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Bold Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "R.W. RUSSELL / BEAVER, PA," circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with two large daisies flanking the maker's mark, applied over slip-coated clay. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with a four-gallon capacity mark below maker's mark and on top of rim. This jar's visually-striking design is highly unusual in Russell's work, as the majority of his pieces were decorated with various fuchsia motifs. The finest example of the form by Russell that we have ever offered. A hairline across underside, continuing 7" up side of jar below one handle. A 9 1/4" cross-shaped hairline on reverse, continuing 1 1/4" onto underside.
