Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, New York City or State origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, featuring the elaborate, impressed and cobalt-highlighted advertising, "GENUINE / DRUGS & MEDCINES(sic) / PAINTS & DYE STUFFS / PATENT MEDCINES(sic) / PERFUMERY / SHIP FURNITURE & C / WHOLE SALE & RETAIL. BY / LAWRENCE. KEESE & CO. / NO 121 MAIDEN LANE / NEW YORK." Decorated below with a curved-stem floral motif. Made for the long-standing lower Manhattan druggist firm of Lawrence, Keese & Co., which operated for several decades beginning around the turn of the nineteenth century. This jug, featuring a ten-line inscription is among the most heavily-impressed advertising pieces that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with some mottling to surface, some light surface wear, and a minor, in-the-firing iron ping to reverse.
