Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "RICHEY & HAMILTON / PALATINE. / W. VA," circa 1880, semi-ovoid pitcher with tall collar and semi-rounded rim, featuring Richey & Hamilton maker's stenciling surrounding a stenciled floral motif. Stenciled twice above with the number "2." Sides and reverse of pitcher's body and collar decorated with large freehand swags. Spout vertically-decorated with three columns of dashes. Stripe decoration to handle and cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. This work, noteworthy in its form, size, and prolific use of both freehand and stenciled elements, is among the finest examples of Palatine, WV stoneware that we have ever offered. A 1" spout chip. In-the-firing surface crazing to underside, extending partway onto body of pitcher, not visible on interior. H 12 1/16".
