Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS. / NEW-YORK," circa 1810, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design featuring splayed leaves. Impressed with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of John Remmey III, above an unusual impressed "1 1/2" indicating gallonage. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Exfoliation to surface. Some wear along bottom edge of underside.
