Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Dated 1863, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, 1863, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with three spotted cobalt tulip motifs over slip-coated clay. Inscribed in cobalt below the handle with the date, "1863." Handle decorated with a foliate motif and flanked swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed below spout with John Bell maker's mark, underscored by a one-gallon capacity mark. A classic example of John Bell decoration, exhibiting strong color and featuring a desirable Civil War era date on the reverse. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
