Extremely Rare Miniature Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "J" and "JS", Jane Lew, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and thin, arching handles, the body profusely-decorated on the front, reverse, and sides, with a flowering plant and star motif. One side inscribed "J" and opposite side inscribed "J.S(?)". Cobalt decoration running along tops of handles and surrounding handle terminals. Exceptional size and outstanding decoration. The color of this churn relates to stoneware produced in Jane Lew, West Virginia by J.P. Parker and S.A. Colvin & Sons during the second half of the 19th century. Additionally, star decorations can be seen in stenciled form in the work of Parker, as well as in brushed form, on a few special examples of Colvin stoneware. Two adjacent reglued pieces at rim, measuring a total of 1 5/8" x 5/8". A few other additional short, tight hairlines from rim. Chips to handles. Small rim chips. H 7 3/4".
