Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Star Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones / Greensboro.," PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a large stenciled design of a star surrounded by triangularly-oriented maker's stenciling for the firm of Hamilton & Jones. Stenciled boldfaced "2" flanked by leaves at midsection. Straight and wavy stripe decoration throughout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A finely-decorated example featuring the region's desirable star motif and unusual diagonal maker's mark. A chip to side of handle and a few minor handle nicks. Discoloration to surface. A minor spout nick. A shallow base chip to side of jug. Some additional, minor chipping to base, much of which is glazed over.
