Rare Redware Jar with Two-Color Slip Decoration, probably Western NY origin, possibly Heber C. Kimball, Mendon, NY, circa 1825, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and flared rim, the lead-glazed surface decorated with scalloped stripes of copper slip interspersed with brushed bands of manganese slip, applied over a mottled orange ground. A colorful jar of appealing form. Decoration of this type was employed by Mormon potter, Heber C. Kimball, at his shop in Mendon, Monroe County, NY, near Rochester. A second, as-yet-unidentified potter from the Rochester area produced larger jars with heavily-brushed manganese banding during the mid 19th century, suggesting such decorative treatments were used regionally. A 1 7/8" chip to rim. Base with two shallow chips and minor wear. Heavy glaze wear to interior. Glazed exterior survives in excellent condition. H 8".
