Scarce Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Somerset, MA, circa 1870, small-sized, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with brushed and slip-trailed design of crested bird perched on a looping branch, surrounded by pairs of dashed cobalt strokes. The smallest-sized vessel bearing a Somerset Potters Works bird design that we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a recently-surfaced Northeastern U.S. collection assembled decades ago. Excellent condition with a few minor, shallow chips to interior of rim, and a 1 7/8" surface fissure at base on reverse, not visible on interior. H 6 1/4".
