Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN. / BUFFALO. N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with spot-and-dash-decorated body, perched on a leafy plant. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Bird decorations by this well-known Buffalo maker are considered unusual. A thin 3 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A 3 1/2" surface line on reverse. A 3" Y-shaped surface line under right handle. A 3" surface line to front of crock, not visible on interior. Some light staining.
