Exceptional One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration of a Man-in-the-Moon with Mustache, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a brushed design of a man's profile with mustache, flanked by a large, crescent-shaped foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exemplary in its color and condition, as well as potted in a desirable size, this jar is one of only a few mustached man-in-the-moon pieces known. Excellent condition with a minor, in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder. H 8 3/4".
