Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to John and James Miller, Strasburg, VA, circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, rounded rim, and arching tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an abstract foliate motif surrounded by spots. Handles brushed over in cobalt. A smooth 2 1/4" in-the-firing contact mark under one handle. A relatively minor in-the-firing contact mark to one handle. An approximately 2 1/4" Y-shaped line at base, extending onto underside. A 1 5/8" chip to underside at edge. A 1" base chip. Other minor base chipping and a small in-the-firing ping to underside.
