Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Pittsburgh, PA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jar with flattened rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt inscription, "FOELL & ALT. / CORNER SARAH / & 20TH. STS. / SOUTH SIDE / PITTS". Base decorated with a freehand "2" flanked by dashes. Cobalt stripe decoration below rim and at base. Although the firm of Foell & Alt ran a pottery in East Birmingham, PA (now South Side Pittsburgh) for a period, this jar was likely made later when the two worked as merchants. Very nice condition with a 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line to front, a 2 3/4" Y-shaped line to revese, a small chip to interior of rim, and a small in-the-firing ping to base on front.
