Rare Spongeware Soap Dish, Signed "Herbert Garvin / Crooksville, / Ohio", early 20th century, molded soap dish with relief image of a sleeping classical figure with cupid whispering in her ear, the surface decorated with cobalt sponging over a Bristol slip ground. According to the US Federal Census, Herbert M. Garvin (1889 - 1964) was a jiggerman at a pottery in Perry County, Ohio, in 1910. His obituary states he worked at the Watt Pottery in Crooksville, which began in 1922. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. L 4 5/8".
