Rare Ten-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Water Cooler with Stenciled Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "EAGLE POTTERY / JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO PA.", circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical vessel with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, applied lug handles, and squared bunghole. Decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged Federal eagle clutching a banner, inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY", above arched James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Midsection with stenciled vine motif. Base with stenciled leaves flanking the bunghole and a stenciled "10" to the right of the bunghole. Cobalt stripe below rim and cobalt highlights to bunghole and handle terminals. Rare form and desirable size, featuring this pottery's iconic eagle motif. Significant crude restoration to reverse, underside, and left side, including a Y-shaped crack extending from left side partway onto front of cooler. H 20 3/8".
