Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Stenciled and Freehand Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO. / PA.", circa 1870, ovoid jug with tooled spout, featuring elaborate Hamilton & Jones "STAR POTTERY" maker's stenciling flanked by stenciled rose motifs. Freehand vining to shoulder. Base with cobalt-script "2", flanked by freehand dashes. Cobalt stripe to base. Crazing to shoulder area, primarily to reverse, a small amount of which extends onto left side of jug's front. A shallow, in-the-firing chip to spout. A salt drip to reverse.
